EU Funding Opportunities


The UK Higher Education International Unit issues a monthly bulletin on Higher Education funding (please note, registration for an account is required to view this content, click here to register), which provides information on current European funding programmes and calls for proposals for higher education and international activity from a variety of different sources outside those of the European Framework Programme for Research (FP7).

ALFA                                                                 


ALFA co-finances projects aimed at improving the capacity of individuals and institutions in the EU andLatin America, objectives include:

  • improving the quality, relevance and accessibility of HE inLatin America;
  • contributing to the process of regional integration inLatin America;
  • fostering progress towards the creation of a joint HE area in the region, exploiting its synergies with the EU.

Competitiveness & Innovation (CIP)       


CIP aims to enhance competitiveness and innovation capacity in the EU; advance the knowledge society; and to ensure secure, sustainable energy forEurope. CIP is the framework for three sub-programmes:

  • Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (EIP) - activities aimed at fostering a culture of entrepreneurship and improving conditions for SMEs;
  • ICT Policy Support Programme (ICT-PSP) - activities designed to stimulate the wider take up of ICT based services and greater exploitation of digital content;
  • Intelligent EnergyEurope(IEE) - activities aiming to develop and promote best practices in energy efficiency and renewable energy in buildings, industry, infrastructure and transport.

Criminal Justice Support Programme


Aims to promote judicial cooperation; compatibility in rules applicable in the Member States; improve contacts and exchange of information and best practices and improve mutual trust with a view to ensuring protection of rights of victims and of the accused.


Civil Justice Programme


The programme aims to 'promote the elimination of obstacles to the good functioning of cross-border civil proceedings in the Member States, thus improving the daily life of individuals and businesses, by fostering access to justice'. Projects supported are intended to improve contacts, exchange of information and networking between legal, judicial and administrative authorities and the legal professions. There is some scope to support judicial training.


Fundamental Rights & Citizenship Funding Programme                              


This Programme forms part of the General Programme 'Fundamental Rights and Justice.' It aims to promote the development of a European Society based on respect for fundamental rights; strengthen civil society; to fight against racism, xenophobia, and anti-semitism and to promote legal, judicial and administrative authorities and the legal professions, including support for judicial training.

 
Culture Programme


Aims to 'enhance the cultural area shared by Europeans through the development of cooperation activities among cultural operators, with a view to encouraging the emergence of European citizenship'. It does so by supporting projects designed to address the following objectives:

  • Promotion of the trans-national mobility of people working in the cultural sector
  • Support for the trans-national circulation of cultural and artistic works and products
  • Promotion of inter-cultural dialogue.

DAPHNE III


The DAPHNE Programme aims to prevent and combat violence against children, young people and women and to protect victims and groups at risk. It forms part of the General Programme 'Fundamental Rights and Justice'. It supports projects that will contribute to the development of Community policy.


Drug Prevention & Information Programme - DPIP


Aims to prevent and reduce drug use, dependence and drug related harms; contribute to the improvement of information on the effects of drug use; support the implementation of the EU Drugs Strategy.

 
EDULINK  


Supports cooperation between HEIs in the EU and African, Caribbean and Pacific States (ACP countries). It aims to improve the effectiveness, management, visibility and impact of ACP-EU cooperation in the field of HE and to build capacity and regional integration in HE in developing ACP countries. It supports institutional networking and sharing best practice at three levels: Developing HE policy and planning; enhancing academic relevance in the regional context, and promoting research and technology development to support teaching excellence.

 
Erasmus Mundus                                                       


Erasmus Mundus is a cooperation and mobility programme that aims to enhance the quality of European Higher Education and to promote dialogue and understanding between people and cultures through cooperation with HEIs in third countries. It supports joint programmes (Masters and Doctorates), partnerships and the promotion of European HE.


EU - Canada Cooperation Programme          


Aims to promote mutual understanding between the peoples of Canada and the EU, including broader knowledge of their languages, cultures and institutions; and to improve the quality of human resources in Canada and the EU by facilitating the acquisition of skills for the global knowledge-based economy.


ATLANTIS - EU - USA Cooperation Programme                   


ATLANTIS aims to promote understanding between the people of the EU and the USA and to improve the quality of human resource development. It supports innovative projects for cooperation in HE and VET.


Europe for Citizens


This Programme supports a wide range of activities and organisations that promote 'active European citizenship'. It is open to applications from all stakeholders involved in promoting active citizenship including educational institutions and research organisations.


Health Programme                                                                      


The Second Programme of Community Action in the Field of Health 2008 - 2013 aims to complement, support and add value to the policies of Member States, its objectives are to improve citizens' health and security; promote health, including the reduction of health inequalities and generate and disseminate health information and knowledge.


ICI Education Cooperation (ICI-ECP)  


The Industrialised Countries Instrument (ICI) promotes cooperation between the EU and 17 industrialised/high income countries in North America, the Asia Pacific and Gulf regions. One of the actions supported by the instrument is the promotion of 'people to people links' with the aim of enhancing mutual understanding between cultures and knowledge exchange. EU cooperation with Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Republic of Korea includes bilateral cooperation projects in higher education and vocational training (ICI-ECP).


Lifelong Learning (LLP)                         


The LLP is the EU's main funding programme for education and training.  Its main objectives are:

  • To contribute through lifelong learning to the development of the EU as an advanced knowledge society, with sustainable economic development, more and better jobs and greater social cohesion;
  • To foster interchange, cooperation and mobility between education and training institutions and systems within the EU so that they become a world quality reference.

The Programme covers all levels of lifelong learning and funds three main areas of activity: Mobility Actions; Collaborative actions and Promotion of European Integration Studies.


LIFE+                                                            


The EU's main funding instrument for the environment; the main objective is to contribute to the implementation, updating and development of EU environmental policy and legislation by co-financing pilot or demonstration projects with European added value. LIFE+ has three components or sub-programmes: Nature and Biodiversity; Environment Policy and Governance and Information and Communication


MEDIA


The MEDIA Programme focuses on activities before and after production in the audiovisual (AV) sector, offering support for training, project development, distribution and promotion. Its overall objectives are:

  • To preserve and enhance European cultural and linguistic diversity and its cinematographic and AV heritage, guarantee its accessibility to the public and promote intercultural dialogue;
  • To increase the circulation and viewership of European AV works inside and outside the European Union, including through greater cooperation between players;
  • To strengthen the competitiveness of the European AV sector in the framework of an open and competitive European market favourable to employment, including by promoting links between AV professionals.

MEDIA Mundus


MEDIA Mundus promotes the development of relations between AV professionals in EU Member States and other countries. It addresses three specific issues: Information exchange, training and market intelligence; Competitiveness and Distribution; and Circulation.


Prevention of & Fight Against Crime Programme


As part of the General Programme 'Security and Safeguarding Liberties' this Programme contributes to a high level of security for citizens by preventing and combating terrorism and crime, organised or otherwise. It has four strands: Crime prevention; Law enforcement; Witness protection and Victim protection.


Progress Programme                                                                        


PROGRESS is the EU's employment and social solidarity programme. It works alongside ESF to support the EU's efforts to deliver growth and more jobs whilst fighting poverty and social exclusion. It is designed to support policy development and delivery in five areas: Employment; Social inclusion and protection; Working conditions; Non-discrimination and Gender equality.


Tempus 


Tempus supports the modernisation of HE in the Partner Countries of Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Western Balkans and the Mediterranean region, mainly through university cooperation projects. It also aims to promote voluntary convergence of partner country higher education systems with EU developments in the field of higher education such as the Lisbon Agenda and the Bologna Process.


Youth in Action Programme


The Youth in Action Programme aims to respond at European level to the needs of young people from adolescence to adulthood. The eligible age range for participants is young people aged between 13 and 30 (depending upon the action). The programme will support a range of non-educational youth activities.
