UK Bologna Experts

The UK has 14 ‘Bologna Experts’ whose job it is to help inform UK higher education institutions about the Bologna Process reforms. The experts were appointed by the British Council, in cooperation with UK HE stakeholders, following approval by the European Commission.

The experts comprise 14 senior academics and administrators who have been chosen because of their in-depth knowledge in quality assurance, qualifications frameworks and recognition issues in higher education. The European Commission and the British Council provide training workshops for them. The Europe Unit also informs Bologna Experts of recent EU and Bologna initiatives through its various publications.

The European Commission has asked UK Bologna Experts to focus on four areas:

  • the promotion and development of student and staff mobility;
  • implementation of ECTS (European Credit Transfer System);
  • implementation of the Diploma Supplement, and;
  • the importance of quality issues relating to mobility, ECTS and the Diploma Supplement.

The European Commission has also created two new additional posts within the existing team of Bologna Experts. 'ECTS and Diploma Supplement Counsellors' will advise UK HEIs on applying for the ECTS and Diploma Supplement labels.
