Erasmus Mundus
The Erasmus Mundus programme (2009-2013) is the European cooperation and mobility programme in higher education that seeks to open up European higher education to the wider world, and vice versa, through cooperation with third countries.
The stated objectives of the Erasmus Mundus programme include:
- enhancement of quality in European higher education
- promotion of the EU as a centre of excellence in learning around the world
- promotion of intercultural understanding through cooperation with Third Countries
- development of Third Countries in the field of higher education
Run by the European Commission, and implemented by the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA), the Erasmus Mundus programme comprises a series of actions. These include support for specifically-labelled joint postgraduate courses offered by consortium of European higher education institutions from at least 3 different countries, with students expected to study in at least two of them. After being selected, consortiums can also establish partnerships with third country higher education institutions.
By supporting the mobility of students and academics throughout the world, the Erasmus Mundus programme aims to prepare its participants for life in a global, knowledge-based society, in line with the goals of the Europe 2020 Strategy and former Lisbon Strategy.
The programme is implemented along three action lines:
- Action 1: joint programmes of outstanding quality at masters and doctoral levels, including scholarships/fellowships to participate in these programmes
- Action 2: partnerships between European and third country higher education institutions, including scholarships and fellowships for mobility at all academic levels
- Action 3: promotion of European higher education through projects to enhance the attractiveness of Europe as an educational destination and a centre of excellence at world level
Erasmus Mundus has a budget of over €950 million, with €493.69 million allocated to Actions 1 and 3, taken from the EU’s education budget, and €460 million allotted to Action 2, taken from a number of different funding instruments (e.g. the Development Co-operation Instrument, the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument, and the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance).
Further details for institutions interested in submitting an application to offer an Erasmus Mundus Master’s course can be found in the Programme Guide or from the British Council.
